About BACKPACK files
The .backpack file extension is associated with the Backpack Word List format, a proprietary data container originally developed by Mammoet Software. These files were primarily used as vocabulary lists and flashcard databases for language learning applications. Inside, they store pairs of words, translations, and occasionally user progress metrics. Because Mammoet Software is no longer in business, these files have become largely obsolete, leaving users stranded without an easy way to access their study materials.
Opening or converting a .backpack file today is a frustrating experience. The original software is virtually impossible to find or run on modern operating systems. A few open-source flashcard tools, such as WordFox, retain legacy support for the format, but installing niche software just to extract a single word list is highly impractical. As a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to parse the database structure, usually returning an error or a corrupted file.
This means you need a realistic workaround to rescue your data. To make your vocabulary useful again, you must convert the contents to universally supported formats like CSV (Comma-Separated Values) or TXT, which can be easily imported into modern apps like Anki or Quizlet. Even if full automated conversion is blocked by the proprietary encoding, our tool inspects the raw file data to expose the underlying text. This allows you to copy your vocabulary lists manually and save them in an open format.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BACKPACK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BACKPACK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BACKPACK converter.
