About AXT files
The .AXT extension is a highly fragmented, multi-purpose format. Its most common use is as an AutoCAD Color Book, which stores custom color palettes for CAD designs in Autodesk AutoCAD. It is also frequently utilized by Adobe Photoshop as an Extract Preset file, by Atomi Systems ActivePresenter as a ZIP-compressed screen recording project, and by Avid video editors for XML-based effect presets.
Because .AXT files serve entirely different purposes across disjointed software ecosystems, they present severe usability challenges. An .AXT file from AutoCAD cannot be read by Photoshop or ActivePresenter. Furthermore, many of these formats are proprietary, entirely undocumented, and tightly bound to expensive, subscription-based software. For example, opening an AutoCAD Color Book naturally requires a costly Autodesk license, and Photoshop Extract presets are obsolete in modern Creative Cloud versions.
True format conversion for .AXT files depends strictly on their origin. ActivePresenter projects, which use standard ZIP compression, can sometimes be extracted to retrieve raw media like MP4 or PNG. XML-based Avid presets can simply be opened in a text editor to view the underlying code. However, direct online conversion is often impossible for the proprietary binary variants without the original authoring software.
Explain why this file format is difficult to open or convert: there is no universal structure for a file just because it ends in .AXT. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. This is why standard online converters fail to process it. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format. We can inspect the file and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format (like a ZIP structure or XML tree), viewing or extracting assets may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AXT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AXT file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use AutoCAD or similar software from the "Application Settings and Presets" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to AXT, try AutoCAD or another comparable tool in the "Application Settings and Presets" category.
The AXT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AXT converter.
