About AXT files
The .AXT extension is a polysemous filename most commonly associated with AutoCAD Color Books. These files are essentially proprietary containers used by AutoCAD to store custom color collections (Pantone, RAL, or user-defined sets) ensuring consistent color reproduction across CAD drawings. The main limitation for users is that .AXT files are not image files or standard palettes; they are specific XML-based definitions that software like Adobe Photoshop or web browsers cannot natively read. If you send an .AXT file to a client or contractor who doesn't have the exact same library installed, they often see incorrect colors or black lines. To fix this, users often need to convert these definitions into universally readable formats like PDF for documentation or ACO (Adobe Color) for cross-platform design work.
A secondary but frequent use case is the ActivePresenter Project file created by Atomi Systems. Users frequently mistake these for playable videos, only to find they cannot upload them to YouTube or view them in VLC Media Player. These are project source files containing raw assets and timeline data, which can often exceed hundreds of megabytes. To make these usable, they must be rendered (converted) into MP4, AVI, or MKV video formats. Other niche variations include older Adobe Photoshop Extract tokens or The Sims 3 color ramps, both of which represent legacy data that is difficult to access without outdated software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AXT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AXT file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use AutoCAD or similar software from the "Color Palette Definition" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to AXT, try AutoCAD or another comparable tool in the "Color Palette Definition" category.
The AXT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AXT converter.
