About AVERY files
The .avery file extension represents a proprietary project file created by Avery Design & Print, a web-based and desktop application used for designing printable media like business cards, address labels, and dividers. Under the hood, this file is actually a compressed ZIP archive containing XML configuration data (.xml) and embedded image assets (.jpg, .png).
The key problem for users is that .avery files are strictly internal project containers; they cannot be opened directly by Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, or standard image viewers. If you attempt to double-click one without the Avery software installed or open in a browser, it will likely fail. The file does not contain the final render, but rather the instructions for the Avery engine to build the label.
To make this file useful, you typically need to convert it based on your end goal:
- For Printing: The standard workflow is to load the file back into Avery Design & Print and export it as a PDF. This ensures font metrics and bleed lines are calculated correctly.
- For Asset Recovery: If you cannot access the Avery platform, you can treat the file as a ZIP archive to extract embedded logos or photos.
- For Archiving: Converting to PDF/A is recommended, as the .avery format relies on a specific software version that may eventually be deprecated.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AVERY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ZDL, PDF, ZIP, JPG, PNG, APK, RPMSG, ENC, CRDOWNLOAD, ZDP and ZWL files.
The AVERY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AVERY converter.
