The .ats file extension is most frequently encountered as a proprietary project file from Autodesk ArtCAM (formerly produced by Delcam). These files typically contain artistic CAD/CAM data, such as vector paths, 2D designs, or tool settings used in CNC woodworking and jewelry manufacturing. A major difficulty for users is that Autodesk discontinued ArtCAM in 2018, rendering these files difficult to access without legacy software or a subscription to its successor, Carveco. Users generally need to convert these locked designs into open 3D formats like STL or OBJ for modern slicers, or DXF for vector editing in Adobe Illustrator.
A secondary but significant use case involves thermal imaging data generated by Teledyne FLIR cameras. In this context, the .ats file stores raw radiometric sequences rather than simple images. These files are not compatible with standard photo viewers and often appear as corrupt files to the uninitiated. To make this data usable, professionals must convert it to JPG for visual inspection or CSV to analyze temperature arrays in Microsoft Excel.
