About AOB files

The .AOB file extension primarily stands for Audio Object. It is the core container format used in the DVD-Audio specification to store high-resolution, uncompressed, or losslessly compressed multichannel audio. These files reside in the AUDIO_TS folder of a physical DVD. A secondary use for .AOB files is associated with the AoB Audiobook Cutter software, which splits large audiobooks into smaller chunks.

To open an .AOB file directly, you typically need a specialized desktop media player like VLC media player or CyberLink PowerDVD.

Users frequently need to convert .AOB files because the DVD-Audio format is obsolete and tied to physical media. These files are massive, often exceeding a gigabyte per file, and they are completely unsupported by modern web browsers, smartphones, or standard digital audio workstations. They are not built for streaming or everyday listening.

The best conversion targets for .AOB files are FLAC or WAV. This preserves the high-resolution, lossless audio quality. If storage space is a strict limit, converting to MP3 or AAC is practical, but this will heavily compress the audio and permanently lose any multichannel surround sound data.

Because .AOB is a closed, proprietary format designed for physical disc authoring, it is exceptionally difficult to open or convert online. Standard online converters fail to process it because the data is often encoded using Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) or protected by CPPM (Content Protection for Prerecorded Media) encryption. Often, only the original disc-authoring software or dedicated decrypting media players can properly read the data. However, convert.guru offers a pragmatic solution. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format without strict encryption, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AOB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VOB, ISO, ATS, IFO, TXT, WAV and FLAC files.
