About AST files

The .AST extension is notoriously fragmented, serving as a proprietary container for over a dozen unrelated applications. Primarily, it functions as a game audio stream file for Nintendo GameCube and Wii titles (often utilizing standard RIFF structures or FMOD), or as a game engine texture file in GIANTS Software's Farming Simulator. Other notable uses include EA Sports game asset archives (BGFA1.05 format), JetDB test databases, and even XML-based animation instances for Sid Meier's Civilization VI.

The massive disadvantage of the .AST format is this exact lack of standardization. Your operating system cannot natively identify if a specific .AST file holds a compressed audio track, a 2D image texture, an Amazon DRM voucher, or a CAD aperture list. Because these files are explicitly designed to be read by proprietary game engines or specific assessment software, they lack basic compatibility with web browsers, media players, and standard image editors.
