The .architect extension is shared by two distinct specialized tools, often leading to confusion. Most commonly (approx. 77%), it is a Data Modeling Project created by SQL Power Architect, an open-source Java-based tool used to design database schemas and Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERDs). These files are essentially XML documents that store table structures, relationships, and visual layouts. Users often need to convert them because the raw .architect file is useless to developers or stakeholders who don't have the software installed; they need standard SQL scripts to build the database or PDF/PNG visuals for documentation. A significant downside is the requirement for a specific Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to open the source file, which can be a security compliance hurdle in modern corporate environments.
The second common type (approx. 22%) is a System Design File associated with London Architect (now legacy software from BSS Audio). These files contain the configuration logic for Soundweb London audio processors (DSPs). This format is problematic because it is proprietary and discontinued; newer software like HiQnet Audio Architect cannot natively open or convert these older files without a manual migration process. Engineers often frantically search for a converter when they inherit an old AV system and need to view the signal flow or export the settings to PDF for archiving.
