About APNX files

The .APNX file is an auxiliary data format developed by Amazon strictly for use within the Kindle ecosystem. It serves a singular, functional purpose: mapping the reflowable content of a Kindle eBook (usually an AZW3 or MOBI file) to the fixed page numbers of a corresponding physical print edition. This allows Kindle users to see "Page 115 of 300" rather than just "Location 2450."

The primary problem for users is mistaking the .APNX file for the eBook itself. Because it often appears in the same directory as the book file, users attempt to open it expecting to read text, only to encounter an error or a binary mess. It contains no readable content, images, or formatting - only a mapping index. It is proprietary, typically encrypted or binary-encoded, and useless without the accompanying media file.

If you are trying to read a book, you likely selected the wrong file; look for the larger AZW, AZW3, or KFX file in the same folder. If you are an author or archivist needing to generate or merge page numbers, the best workflow involves using Calibre. For reading purposes, you should convert the main eBook file to PDF (for fixed layout) or EPUB (for universal e-reader support).

Convert.Guru analyzes your APNX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EA, AZW3, PHL, AZW, EPUB, MBP, PDF, SDR, PRNX, KFX and MOBI files.
