About ALBUM files

The .ALBUM file extension is a legacy artifact primarily associated with discontinued photo management software, most notably Google Picasa. In the majority of cases (approx. 54%), these files are not proprietary containers but standard JFIF (JPEG) images masquerading with a different extension, often created as cache files or thumbnails within the Picasa ecosystem. Because Picasa was retired in 2016, users frequently encounter these "orphaned" files on old hard drives, unable to open them with modern viewers like Microsoft Photos or Apple Preview.

A secondary but significant use case (approx. 21%) is generated by Quick Picture Viewer, where the .ALBUM file is actually a standard ZIP archive containing a gallery of images. The frustration here lies in the ambiguity; the operating system sees an unknown file type rather than a recognized image or archive.
