About ALBM files
The .ALBM file is a proprietary digital photo album format primarily used by legacy HP PhotoSmart and HP Photo Printing software. It stores a collection of images, album layouts, metadata, and thumbnail previews, rather than standard standalone image data. Another variant was occasionally associated with Apple iPhoto for storing album caches or configurations. Because .ALBM relies on the internal Microsoft Compound file structure, it acts more like a container or database than a standard picture file. This makes it impossible to open with modern web browsers, standard image viewers, or contemporary photo editing tools. Users must often maintain outdated HP software just to view their old photo collections, which is highly impractical on modern operating systems. Converting .ALBM files typically means extracting the embedded photos and saving them as JPG or PNG files, or printing the entire album layout to a PDF. Note that extracting the images often strips away the original album formatting, page layouts, and specific slideshow settings. This is a closed, proprietary format.
