About AFF files
The .AFF extension represents a dichotomy in the digital world: it is either a lightweight text-based rule file or a massive forensic disk image. Most commonly, it serves as a Hunspell Affix File, the backbone of spell-checking for open-source heavyweights like LibreOffice, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. These files do not contain the full word list themselves; instead, they store complex morphological rules (prefixes and suffixes) that define how words in the accompanying DIC file can be modified. Users often attempt to open these expecting a simple vocabulary list, only to find cryptic alphanumeric flags like PFX A Y 1. To make this data usable for standard word lists or analysis, you must convert the .aff and .dic pair into a standard TXT or XML format.
Alternatively, in security and legal sectors, .AFF stands for the Advanced Forensics Format. These are open-standard disk images created by tools like Guymager or Autopsy to store exact copies of hard drives along with metadata. The friction here is significant: these files can be hundreds of gigabytes, are essentially "locked" containers to standard operating systems, and require specialized mounting tools to explore. For archiving or broader compatibility with legacy forensic suites, professionals often need to convert these images to raw DD, E01, or standard ISO formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AFF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AFF file to ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW, VBOX or OVA, you can use Hunspell or similar software from the "Spell Check Affix Rules" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to AFF, try Hunspell or another comparable tool in the "Spell Check Affix Rules" category.
The AFF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AFF converter.
