About ADP files
The .adp extension primarily refers to the Access Data Project file, a discontinued format by Microsoft used to connect Microsoft Access front-end interfaces directly to an SQL Server back-end. While efficient in older environments (Access 2000–2010), these files are no longer supported in Access 2013 and later versions. This creates a significant lock-in problem: users cannot open or edit these files in modern Office suites without maintaining a legacy virtualization environment. To regain access to the forms, reports, and VBA macros, users must migrate or convert the logic into the newer ACCDB format or a web-based solution.
Simultaneously, .adp is widely used in the gaming industry as a proprietary Audio Stream format for consoles like the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo GameCube, as well as in games by Traveller's Tales (e.g., LEGO series). These files contain ADPCM-encoded audio (music or dialogue) optimized for hardware streaming. Standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player often fail to recognize or play these streams due to their non-standard headers and interleaving. To listen to game soundtracks or use these assets in video editing, users need to convert them to standard formats like MP3, WAV, or OGG.
Additionally, some industrial instruments (e.g., from Anton Paar) generate .adp files which are simply renamed ZIP archives containing diagnostic logs. Recognizing which type of file you have is the first step to successful conversion.

The ADP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ADP converter.
