About ADDON files

A .ADDON file is primarily a compiled plugin used by ReShade, the generic post-processing injector for video games. Introduced with ReShade 5.0, these files are technically Dynamic Link Libraries (.DLL) that have been renamed to distinguish them from standard system files. They allow developers to create advanced tools - such as depth-buffer analyzers, texture dumpers, and shader togglers - that hook directly into the ReShade API.

Users frequently encounter friction because .ADDON files are binary executables (PE format), not text files like standard FX shaders. You cannot simply open them in a text editor to modify code, and double-clicking them will trigger a "Windows cannot open this file" error. Because they function as injectors, they may also trigger false positive alerts from antivirus software. While you cannot "convert" a compiled add-on back into editable source code easily, you can rename the extension to DLL to inspect its dependencies or view its internal structure using a resource viewer. For the file to function, it must not be converted but rather placed in the same directory as the game executable or ReShade binary.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ADDON file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ADDON64, MCADDON, CPG, RPF, ZIP, RAR, JAR and MOD files.

The ADDON Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ADDON converter.
