About ACCESS files
Users typically encounter the .ACCESS extension in two drastically different scenarios: as a critical system configuration in Java environments, or as a distressing symptom of a Dharma ransomware infection.
In the context of Java Management Extensions (JMX), the file is named jmxremote.access. It is a plain text configuration file located in the $JRE/lib/management directory, used to define user roles (like readonly or readwrite) for remote monitoring. These files are essential for administrators using tools like JConsole but often lack a default association in Windows, appearing as unknown files. You can safely "convert" these to TXT simply by opening them in a text editor to modify permissions.
However, if you suddenly find your personal photos (JPG, PNG) or documents (DOCX) renamed with a .access extension (e.g., photo.jpg.access), your system has likely been compromised by the Dharma or CrySiS ransomware family. In this case, the file is not just renamed but encrypted with AES-256 encryption. Standard conversion software cannot unlock these files. Attempting to force-convert them to image formats will result in errors. Recovery requires restoring from backup or using specific decryption tools from security vendors like Emsisoft or Kaspersky, provided a decryption key is available.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ACCESS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ACCESS file to SQL, SQLITE, CSV, PDF, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG or CONF, you can use Java Development Kit or similar software from the "Java Access Control Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to ACCESS, try Java Development Kit or another comparable tool in the "Java Access Control Configuration" category.
The ACCESS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ACCESS converter.
