About AC files
The .AC extension represents a frustrating namespace collision between 3D graphics and software development. Most frequently (approx. 40%), this file is a native 3D model created by Inivis AC3D, a lightweight 3D modeling tool. These files store 3D geometry, texture coordinates, and object hierarchies in an ASCII text format. The primary issue users face is interoperability: while AC3D is a capable tool, industry-standard suites like Blender, Maya, and game engines like Unity do not support .AC files out of the box. You are often left with a valid 3D asset that you cannot import, view, or print without the original software or a dedicated plugin.
To integrate these assets into a modern workflow, conversion is usually the only path forward. For general editing and rendering, convert the file to OBJ or FBX, which preserve UV mapping and hierarchy. For 3D printing purposes, converting to STL is the standard approach, though you may lose color data.
Note for Developers: If the file is named configure.ac, it is not a 3D model. It is a GNU Autoconf input file containing M4 macros used to generate software compilation scripts. These should be treated as TXT or code files. Other niche uses include ActivePresenter project files (which are renamed ZIP archives) and logs for GOM Metrology systems.

The AC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AC converter.
