About AC files

The .AC file extension typically represents a 3D model file created by Inivis AC3D, a lightweight 3D modeling application. These files store 3D geometry, object coordinates, and material properties in a plain-text structure. Alternatively, developer environments use .AC files as configuration scripts for GNU Autoconf, while enterprise accounting systems use them as client databases in CaseWare Working Papers or measurement files in ZEISS GOM Metrology.

Despite their historical use, .AC files present severe usability challenges. The 3D models are confined to niche software ecosystems. You cannot natively view an .AC 3D file on Windows or macOS, and modern web browsers completely ignore them. Furthermore, collaboration is difficult because mainstream 3D applications often require specialized, sometimes outdated, plugins just to import an .AC structure. If your file is a CaseWare database or an ActivePresenter project, it is strictly locked into those respective paid software environments, limiting independent access.

To break free from these restrictions, you must convert the file based on your final goal. For cross-platform 3D editing or 3D printing, convert .AC to standard OBJ or STL files.
