Convert SED to another file type
To convert SED scripts to another format, you need Microsoft IExpress or other Developer software.
Convert a file to SED
To convert other file formats to the "Build / Script File" file type, you need software like Microsoft IExpress or a similar tool.
About SED files
The .SED file format serves multiple different purposes depending on the software environment. Its most common use is as a Self Extraction Directive file for Microsoft IExpress, a legacy Windows utility used to package installation files into standalone executables. Alternatively, it is used as a script file containing text processing commands for GNU sed, a fundamental Unix stream editor. In niche sectors, .SED files function as proprietary data for Siemens SIMATIC WinCC SCADA systems, spectral data for Spectral Evolution devices, or encrypted system keys for the Nintendo 3DS.
Users often need to convert or inspect these files to extract the underlying script logic or installation paths. The major disadvantage of the .SED format is its severe fragmentation. When you receive an .SED file, it is often unclear if it is a harmless text script, an archaic Windows configuration, or a proprietary binary file. The proprietary variants are closed formats that cannot be read outside their specific environments. Furthermore, Microsoft IExpress is obsolete and lacks modern security features, making its packaging format highly unsuitable for modern software distribution.
For IExpress directives and sed scripts, the best conversion targets are TXT or BAT. Converting to a standard text format allows developers to read the code without triggering execution or requiring the original host software. Be aware that converting a script to plain text strips its executable properties.
Because .SED files share the same extension across completely unrelated platforms, they are difficult to open or convert reliably. Proprietary variants like the Siemens or Nintendo files are closed binary blobs; often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail to process them because they cannot distinguish between a text script and a binary blob. Our platform inspects the internal file structure to bypass extension confusion, showing you readable text or embedded data if a supported format is detected.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SED file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SED file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use Microsoft IExpress or similar software from the "Self-Extracting Directive or Script" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to SED, try Microsoft IExpress or another comparable tool in the "Self-Extracting Directive or Script" category.
The SED Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SED converter.
