About 32X files

A .32X file is a read-only memory (ROM) image dumped from a game cartridge designed for the Sega 32X, an add-on peripheral for the Sega Genesis console released in 1994. These files contain the binary code and assets (such as 32-bit graphics and PWM audio) required to run specific titles like Knuckles' Chaotix or Doom.

The frustrating part with .32X files is their hardware specificity; they rely on the dual SH-2 RISC processors found in the original add-on. Consequently, standard Genesis emulators often fail to load them unless specifically configured with 32X BIOS files. Furthermore, uncompressed ROMs can be unnecessarily large for archiving.

For storage and distribution, users typically convert these files to ZIP or 7Z archives to save space without altering the data. If you are configuring a specific emulator front-end like RetroArch, you may need to rename the extension to BIN or MD (Mega Drive), though the internal header data remains distinct.

Convert.Guru analyzes your 32X file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CUE, ZIP, GSX, GMV and GS0 files.
