Convert GS0 to another file type
To convert GS0 save states to another format, you need Gens/GS or other Game software.
Convert a file to GS0
To convert other file formats to the "Emulator Save State" file type, you need software like Gens/GS or a similar tool.
About GS0 files
A .gs0 file is a quick save state created by Sega Genesis emulators, most notably Gens/GS. It stores an exact snapshot of the console's RAM, CPU registers, and audio state at a specific millisecond in the game. The "0" indicates that this file occupies Quick Save Slot 0.
These files are typically generated and read by Gens/GS or other derivatives of the original Gens emulator. Because they are designed for instant loading, they bypass the standard in-game saving mechanics entirely.
The main disadvantage of a .gs0 file is its strict software dependency. It is a proprietary, raw memory dump tied to a specific emulator version. Unlike standard battery saves, you cannot easily move a .gs0 file between different emulator families, such as moving from Gens to a RetroArch Genesis Plus GX core. Furthermore, quick saves are highly volatile and are easily overwritten if a user presses the wrong hotkey.
Converting a .gs0 file directly to a standard sav or srm battery save is mathematically complex because the file lacks standard file headers. Users usually want to convert it to standard formats to migrate their gameplay progress to modern hardware.
This file format is difficult to open or convert externally. Often, only the original Gens/GS software can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal hexadecimal structure, and extract readable text or embedded battery data if our analysis detects supported underlying content.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GS0 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted GS1, GS5 and GS4 files.

The GS0 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GS0 converter.
