Convert a file to GS0

To convert other file formats to the "Console Emulation" file type, you need software like Gens or a similar tool.

About GS0 files

A .gs0 file is a "save state" created by Gens, a classic Sega Genesis / Mega Drive emulator. Specifically, the "0" indicates it is the file for Slot 0, often used as a quick save. Unlike standard in-game battery saves (which mimic the cartridge's save function), this file contains a raw binary dump of the emulated console's RAM, CPU registers, and video memory at a specific millisecond.

The Problem: Emulator Lock-in

Because .gs0 files capture the internal architecture of the Gens emulator, they are incompatible with modern emulators like RetroArch, Genesis Plus GX, or hardware clones like the Analogue Mega Sg. Users often find old backups of these files and realize they cannot open them on their phone or modern PC setup. Simply renaming the extension to state will not work and may crash the new emulator.

The Solution: Migration to .SRM

The only reliable way to "convert" a .gs0 file is to perform a bridge migration. You must load the state in the original Gens software, then perform a standard in-game save (e.g., finding a save point in Sonic 3 or Phantasy Star IV). This generates a SRM (Static RAM) file, which is the universal standard for Genesis saves and is supported by virtually all emulators, including Kega Fusion and RetroArch.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GS0 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GS1, GS5 and GS4 files.

The GS0 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GS0 converter.
