About GSX files
A .gsx file is a savestate generated by the Gens/GS Sega Genesis emulator. It captures a literal snapshot of the emulated console at a specific frame, including the active RAM, VRAM, CPU registers, and audio chips. This allows players to freeze and resume gameplay instantly without relying on the game's internal save mechanics. The file is primarily managed by Gens/GS and the legacy Gens emulator. Users often seek to convert .gsx files when switching to modern emulators or when trying to salvage gameplay progress. However, the format is highly proprietary and tightly coupled to the specific internal architecture of the Gens emulator. Standard online converters fail to process .gsx files because they are complex binary memory dumps rather than standard media or document files. Unlike standard battery save files (SRM), savestates often break between different versions of the same emulator and are completely incompatible with modern alternatives like Kega Fusion or RetroArch. Because this is a closed, proprietary format, direct conversion to other emulator states is extremely difficult. Fortunately, convert.guru provides a realistic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view its underlying hex data, and convert it when possible. While direct emulation conversion is rare, our analysis tools can detect embedded text strings, header metadata, or raw data blocks to help you inspect the contents of your frozen game state.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GSX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GSX file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Gens/GS or similar software from the "Emulator Savestate Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to GSX, try Gens/GS or another comparable tool in the "Emulator Savestate Storage" category.
The GSX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GSX converter.
