About XWS files
The .XWS file extension typically serves one of two very different purposes, creating significant confusion for users trying to access their content.
Most commonly (71%), it is a PhysioNet WAVE Script used by researchers to visualize physiological signals (like ECGs) hosted on PhysioNet. These files do not contain the actual waveform data; instead, they act as remote launchers (similar to a shortcut) that instruct the Java-based WAVE application where to fetch the heavy DAT and HEA files. The main frustration for users is the dependency on a legacy Java environment - without it, the file simply refuses to execute. For quick inspection of the data sources or parameters, it is best to convert or view these files as Plain Text (.TXT).
Alternatively, gamers may encounter .XWS files as proprietary Xbox 360 Wave Sound Banks or audio streams from Koei Tecmo games. These are specialized containers holding audio data encoded in formats like XMA or ADPCM. Because they are designed for specific hardware or middleware (like CRIware), standard media players like VLC Media Player cannot play them directly. To access the music or voice tracks inside, users must convert these archives to standard WAV or MP3 formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XWS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XWS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XWS converter.
