About XWS files

The .XWS file format has multiple distinct uses depending on the software environment. Primarily, it functions as a Physiological Signal Viewer Script for the PhysioNet WAVE waveform browser. These scripts automate the display of biomedical time-series data within the WFDB (Waveform Database) ecosystem. Alternatively, .XWS acts as a ZIP-compressed workspace file used by developer tools like Cadence Tensilica Xtensa Xplorer or Xilinx Workspace Studio by AMD. Other less common uses include Xcas computer algebra worksheets, Xbox 360 Wave Sound Banks encoded with CRI Middleware, and Xara Web Designer graphics.

Users often struggle with .XWS files because they are highly niche and heavily fragmented. A PhysioNet script is entirely useless without the associated waveform data files and the specialized WAVE application. Similarly, developer workspace files are strictly tied to specific IDE versions, and game audio banks utilize proprietary audio containers. Standard web browsers and generic document editors do not support .XWS natively.

Converting an .XWS file depends completely on its internal structure. A PhysioNet script is plain text and can be viewed as a TXT file. An Xtensa workspace is a standard ZIP archive, meaning its internal contents can be extracted using a standard unzipper. Game audio banks require specialized extraction tools to yield standard WAV or MP3 files. Standard online converters almost always fail here because they blindly process the file extension without checking if the file is a developer workspace, a math worksheet, or a game sound bank.

Because this file format is difficult to open or convert blindly, you need to know exactly what is inside. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. We will inspect the file and show text or internal directory trees. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like a ZIP archive or plain text - viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XWS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HEA, SSW and DND files.

The XWS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XWS converter.
