About WAVE files

The .wave file extension is a less common alternative spelling for the standard wav (WAVEform Audio File Format) developed by Microsoft and IBM. It contains uncompressed, lossless audio data, typically using Linear Pulse Code Modulation (LPCM).

You can play .wave files in almost any media player or audio workstation, including VLC media player or Audacity. You can learn more about the technical specifications on its Wikipedia page.

The biggest disadvantage of the .wave format is its massive file size. Because the audio is completely uncompressed, a single minute of CD-quality sound consumes roughly 10 megabytes of storage. This makes these files difficult to send via email, slow to upload, and completely unsuitable for direct web streaming. Furthermore, the standard format is restricted by an absolute 4GB file size limit, and embedding metadata (like artist names or album art) is poorly supported and often breaks between different players.

To solve these problems, you should convert .wave files to modern formats. Convert to MP3 or M4A (AAC) for everyday listening and sharing, which dramatically reduces file size while maintaining acceptable quality. If you are archiving audio and refuse to lose quality, convert to FLAC, which compresses the data losslessly and supports proper tagging. Even though .wave is an open format, our tool helps you bypass annoying size limitations and metadata issues instantly.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WAVE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WAV, MP3, MIDI, OGG, PCM, FLAC and MO3 files.
