The .XUL file is an XML User Interface Language file originally created by the Mozilla Foundation. It is a markup language used to build the graphical user interface for legacy Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, and SeaMonkey extensions. It relies heavily on Mozilla's Gecko rendering engine to draw buttons, menus, and layout containers.
The main disadvantage of the .XUL format is that it is obsolete and heavily proprietary. Modern web browsers, including recent versions of Firefox, no longer support native XUL extensions, having shifted entirely to standard WebExtensions technologies. Consequently, a .XUL file cannot be opened natively as a functional web page in browsers like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
Users typically need to convert these files to modern web standards, primarily HTML, CSS, and JS. However, because XUL contains application-specific XML nodes, an automated 1:1 conversion into a working HTML interface is rarely possible without losing functionality. Most users simply need to extract the raw code as TXT or XML to rewrite the interface manually.
