About XUL files

The .XUL file format is a legacy markup document created by Mozilla to define user interfaces for applications like Firefox and Thunderbird. While revolutionary at its inception for allowing cross-platform UI definitions using XML, it has become a significant source of friction for modern developers. Support for XUL was largely removed from the mainstream Firefox browser in the "Quantum" update, rendering many older extensions and applications obsolete. Because it relies on the specific Gecko rendering engine, .XUL files cannot be opened or rendered natively in standard web browsers like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. This proprietary lock-in means you are often left with a file that looks like code but fails to execute.
