The .export file extension is a generic output format used by dozens of unrelated software applications to back up, migrate, or share data. Because "export" is a generic term rather than a standardized file type, the internal structure of a .export file varies entirely depending on the program that created it. The most common use is for router configuration backups from AVM FRITZ!Box, storing network settings. It is also frequently used as a CMS object package (often in UTF-8 text) for Kentico Xperience, an emulator game save for My Boy! GBA, an XML project file for CODESYS, or a zipped electronic design library from Altium Designer.
The primary disadvantage of a .export file is its ambiguity. Without knowing the source software, operating systems do not know how to open it, and users are left guessing whether the file contains plain text, an XML database, a JSON array, or compressed ZIP data. Trying to open it in a standard text editor might freeze your computer if the file is a large, compressed binary. Furthermore, these files are usually proprietary and locked to the specific software ecosystem that generated them.
To make the data usable outside its original software, you must identify its underlying format and convert it. If the file is text-based (like Kentico or CODESYS exports), convert it to TXT or XML for safe viewing and editing. If it is a compressed Altium library or Oracle billing export, extracting it to ZIP or GZ reveals the internal contents. For web use or database migration, converting JSON-based exports to standard JSON or CSV is the best approach.
