Convert XSO to another file type
To convert XSO projects to another format, you need Expresso or other Developer software.
Convert a file to XSO
To convert other file formats to the "Regex Project File" file type, you need software like Expresso or a similar tool.
About XSO files
The .XSO file extension is exclusively used as an Expresso Regex Project file. It stores regular expressions, test text, and configuration settings used by developers working with Regular expressions in the .NET framework. The primary software to create and open these files is Expresso by Ultrapico.
Users often need to extract the raw regex pattern or test strings from an .XSO file when moving to modern web-based programming environments or regex testers. The main disadvantage of the .XSO format is its proprietary, legacy nature. It is locked to a specific desktop application that requires installation and runs only on Windows. It is not supported by web browsers, making it extremely frustrating to share regex snippets with colleagues on macOS or Linux.
The best conversion targets for an .XSO file are standard developer text formats. You should convert or extract the data to TXT to recover the raw regular expression, or XML and JSON to migrate the project settings. Note that application-specific visual layout states will be permanently lost during extraction.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because standard online document converters do not understand its specialized developer structure. Often, only the original Expresso software can properly read or export the project data. We can inspect the file's internal structure and extract the underlying text, helping you recover the embedded regex patterns without needing a Windows machine.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XSO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XSO file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Expresso or similar software from the "Developer Project Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to XSO, try Expresso or another comparable tool in the "Developer Project Storage" category.
The XSO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XSO converter.
