Convert a file to XPI
To convert other file formats to the "Mozilla Extension Archive" file type, you need software like Mozilla Firefox or a similar tool.
About XPI files
The .XPI file format is a cross-platform installer package primarily used to distribute browser extensions for Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, and SeaMonkey. Internally, an .XPI is simply a compressed ZIP archive containing the add-on's structural data, such as a manifest.json or install.rdf file, alongside JavaScript, CSS, and image assets.
While installing an .XPI file directly into a browser is straightforward, managing or inspecting the file outside the browser is frustrating. You cannot easily view the source code to audit it for security risks without extracting it first. Relying blindly on third-party extensions can compromise user privacy, and many developers or advanced users want to inspect the code before installation. Furthermore, native operating systems do not automatically recognize .XPI as an archive, requiring manual workarounds to bypass default application mappings.
To view the contents securely, convert your .XPI file to a standard archive format. Convert to ZIP or 7Z to easily extract and read the underlying JavaScript and manifest files. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XPI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XPI file to CRX, ZIP, DLL, SO, DYLIB, BUNDLE, PLUGIN, SAFARIEXTZ, APPEX, KEXT, SYS or DRV, you can use Mozilla Firefox or similar software from the "Browser Extension Package" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LV2, DYLIB, VST, AAX, DRV, TDE, LADSPA, BUNDLE, AU, DLL, RTAS or SO files to XPI, try Mozilla Firefox or another comparable tool in the "Browser Extension Package" category.
The XPI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XPI converter.
