To convert other file formats to the "Application Log File" file type, you need software like AutoCAD or a similar tool.
About XLG files
The .XLG file extension serves multiple, unrelated purposes depending on the software that created it. Most frequently, it acts as an AutoCAD External Reference Log. When users attach external references (Xrefs) to a drawing in AutoCAD, the software automatically generates an .XLG file to record the activity. Alternatively, Tally ERP 9 uses .XLG for accounting transaction and data export logs. In older graphic design workflows, Xara graphics software generates .XLG files that are actually standard JFIF (JPEG) images used for font galleries.
Because the .XLG extension is shared among completely different data types, it creates significant confusion. A user might try to open an .XLG file expecting a readable text log, only to find scrambled binary data if it is a Xara graphic or a proprietary set-top box localized game file compressed with zlib. Furthermore, standard online converters often fail because they rely solely on the file extension rather than inspecting the internal file structure. The major disadvantage of the .XLG format is this ambiguity - without the original software, it is hard to know what data you actually possess.
If your .XLG is a text-based log from AutoCAD or Tally, the best conversion targets are TXT or PDF for easy sharing and archiving. If it is a Xara graphic, converting it to a standard JPG or PNG makes it accessible in any modern image viewer or web browser.
Converting these files can be frustrating because many operating systems and tools simply reject the .XLG extension. Our platform analyzes the file signature - whether it is plain text, a zlib-compressed archive, or a JFIF image - allowing you to extract the underlying data even without expensive software licenses.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XLG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XLG file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use AutoCAD or similar software from the "External Reference Log File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to XLG, try AutoCAD or another comparable tool in the "External Reference Log File" category.
The XLG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XLG converter.
