The .XLA format is a legacy Microsoft Excel Add-in file. It is used to distribute and install extra features, custom functions, and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros to enhance standard spreadsheet workflows. Originally designed for Excel 97 through 2003, it utilizes the Microsoft OLE Compound File Binary format.
These files are managed by Microsoft Excel and require a paid desktop installation to execute properly. You need to convert or migrate .XLA files because they are severely outdated.
