About XEF files
The .XEF file extension is most commonly associated with Kinect Sensor Data Streams generated by Microsoft Kinect for Windows. These files record raw multi-channel data from the Kinect sensor, including color video, infrared, and depth mapping information. Another major use case is for hidden or encrypted files created by WinMend Folder Hidden, a utility used to lock and hide directories. Additionally, it is used as an XML-based PLC project exchange file by Schneider Electric Control Expert (formerly Unity Pro XL).\n\nKinect data streams require Kinect Studio for playback and export. WinMend files require the original WinMend Folder Hidden utility and the user's master password to decrypt. PLC exchange files can be imported via Schneider Electric Control Expert.\n\nThe main disadvantage of .XEF files is their highly specialized and proprietary nature. Kinect streams are massive, often reaching several gigabytes for short recordings, and cannot be played in standard media players like VLC or web browsers. WinMend files are deliberately obfuscated to block access, and renaming the extension will not reveal the hidden content. This lack of interoperability makes managing and sharing .XEF files frustrating.\n\nFor Kinect data, users typically convert the raw streams into standard video formats like MKV or AVI, or extract the depth data to point clouds in PLY or CSV formats for 3D modeling. For PLC project files, the data can be parsed as plain XML.\n\nBecause these are closed, proprietary formats or actively encrypted security files, standard online converters fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read, decrypt, or export the data. However, you can just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the exact format, view its structure, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like the raw XML in a Schneider PLC exchange file - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XEF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XEF file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use Kinect Studio or similar software from the "Sensor Data & File Encryption" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to XEF, try Kinect Studio or another comparable tool in the "Sensor Data & File Encryption" category.
The XEF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XEF converter.
