About XDI files

The .XDI file extension predominantly represents a compressed disk image archive. These files are typically Extended Disc Images created by utility tools like WinArchiver or PowerISO to store 1:1 copies of CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray discs. In forensic environments, .XDI files are also generated by X-Ways Forensics to secure bit-level copies of evidence drives. Less commonly, the format is used as a disk catalog index file by the legacy software WhereIsIt? or as an obscure eBook format for XDI Viewer. The main disadvantage of an .XDI file is its proprietary nature. Unlike standard ISO or ZIP files, .XDI is not supported natively by Windows, macOS, or Linux. Users often encounter these files when downloading software backups or receiving forensic data, only to find they cannot mount or extract them without purchasing a premium license or installing specialized, outdated software. Additionally, these disk images frequently exceed 4GB, making them difficult to share or upload without splitting. Because .XDI relies on proprietary compression and encoding algorithms, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only the original software can properly read or export the contained data. However, convert.guru provides a pragmatic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our system can inspect the file headers to confirm its origin (e.g., WinArchiver vs. WhereIsIt?). If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible. When dealing with disk images, the best conversion target is always an ISO file, as it offers universal compatibility across operating systems. Alternatively, extracting the contents to a ZIP or 7Z archive allows immediate access to the internal files without mounting software. Be aware that converting a forensic image might strip metadata critical for legal chain-of-custody.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XDI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IMG, ISO, PDF, VDI, ZIP, UFDX, DMG and AD1 files.

The XDI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XDI converter.
