About XDI files
The .xdi file extension is most notoriously known as a WinArchiver Extended Disc Image, a proprietary container format developed by Power Software Ltd. While often mistaken for a dedicated eBook format because it is frequently used to bundle downloaded books and software, it is technically a compressed disk image similar to ISO or DMG, but with specific features for "instant mounting" as a virtual drive.
Users typically encounter this file after downloading content, only to find their standard tools like 7-Zip or Windows Explorer cannot open it. The file locks your content inside a proprietary wrapper that forces the use of WinArchiver or PowerISO. For practical use, you rarely want to keep the file in .xdi format.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For Access: Convert/Extract to ZIP or raw folder structure to access the inner contents (often PDF, EPUB, or EXE files).
- For Mounting: Convert to standard ISO to use with free tools like VirtualBox or Windows native mounting.
- For Catalogs: A minority of .xdi files are catalog indexes from WhereIsIt?, used to track offline disks. These should be exported to CSV or XML for modern database use.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XDI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted IMG, ISO, PDF, VDI, ZIP, UFDX, DMG and AD1 files.
The XDI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XDI converter.
