About X3F files

The .X3F file is a proprietary raw image format generated by digital cameras equipped with the Foveon X3 sensor, which is exclusively manufactured by Sigma Corporation. Unlike standard Bayer array sensors, Foveon sensors capture full RGB color data at every pixel location using stacked silicon layers. The .X3F file acts as a digital negative, storing this uncompressed, massive, and highly detailed sensor data.

To view and process these files natively, you must use Sigma Photo Pro, the official raw conversion software provided by the manufacturer. Other mainstream raw processors like Adobe Lightroom often struggle with Foveon sensor architectures, offering limited, slow, or delayed support depending on the specific camera model.
