About X3F files
The .X3F file is the proprietary RAW format for digital cameras manufactured by SIGMA, distinguished by their use of the unique Foveon X3 sensor. Unlike traditional Bayer sensors that capture color via a mosaic, the Foveon sensor stacks red, green, and blue pixels vertically - similar to analog film layers - resulting in .X3F files that contain vastly more color data per pixel location.
While this architecture delivers exceptional color fidelity and sharpness, it can be a hassle for users: the files are massive, unsupported by standard web browsers, and require complex processing algorithms that most generic image viewers simply cannot execute correctly. Opening these files without the native Sigma Photo Pro software often results in inaccurate colors or "flat" contrast because standard decoders struggle with the unique vertical data structure. For practical workflows, users must convert .X3F to TIFF (16-bit) for high-quality editing in Adobe Photoshop, or to JPG for immediate sharing and web proofing. For long-term archiving that remains accessible to third-party tools like Adobe Lightroom, converting to the DNG (Digital Negative) format is the industry-standard best practice.

The X3F Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our X3F converter.
