About X3DB files
The .X3DB file is a binary-encoded Extensible 3D (X3D) model used to store 3D graphics, scenes, and animations. It is heavily utilized in 3D printing and web-based 3D visualizations. Software like the Visualization Toolkit (VTK) natively supports this format, and it was historically popular with the Shapeways 3D printing service. For more details on the underlying standard, visit the X3D Wikipedia page.
Users frequently need to convert .X3DB files because the binary encoding creates a strict compatibility barrier. While standard X3D files use a human-readable XML structure, the .X3DB format is compressed and entirely unreadable without specialized software. It is not supported by standard operating system viewers or basic web browsers without dedicated plugins. This makes sharing files with clients or importing them into basic CAD tools extremely difficult.
We recommend converting .X3DB to STL or OBJ for widespread 3D printing and CAD software compatibility. If your goal is web publishing, GLTF or GLB are the best modern alternatives. Be aware that converting to basic geometry formats like STL will strip out any color, texture, or animation data stored in the original X3D scene graph.
Because .X3DB is a closed, binary-encoded scene graph rather than a simple polygon mesh, standard online converters often fail to process it. Just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal metadata, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded mesh, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your X3DB file.
If you want to convert X3DB file to DAE, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D or WRL, you can use Visualization Toolkit or similar software from the "Binary 3D Model Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to X3DB, try Visualization Toolkit or another comparable tool in the "Binary 3D Model Storage" category.
The X3DB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our X3DB converter.
