A .WXS file serves two very different audiences, creating frequent confusion. Primarily, it is a WiX Source File, an XML-based text document used by developers to build Windows installers. These files contain the "recipes" for installation packages (registry keys, file paths, shortcuts) but are not executable themselves. You cannot double-click a .WXS file to install software; it must be compiled and linked into an MSI or EXE using the command-line based WiX Toolset. This process is often technically demanding for non-developers who just want to install an application.
A secondary but significant use case (approx. 25%) is for Cross-stitch Patterns created by software like WinXstitch or Ursa Software Pattern Maker. These files contain proprietary needlework designs. The main limitation here is accessibility: standard image viewers and web browsers cannot open them, locking the design inside niche, sometimes outdated software.
For WiX files, the pragmatic solution for non-developers is converting to TXT or XML to simply read the code contents without Visual Studio. If you need the actual installer, you must locate the compiled MSI instead. For Cross-stitch users, the best conversion target is PDF (for printing charts/instructions) or JPG/PNG (for sharing the visual design on the web).
