.WXS files serve two completely different purposes depending on their origin. The vast majority are Windows Installer XML Source files used by the WiX Toolset to build Windows installation packages (MSI files). These are plain text files written in standard XML. The second, less common use is as a WinXstitch cross-stitch pattern file created by Ursa Software, which is a strictly proprietary binary format used by crafters to store sewing designs.
The main disadvantage of handling .WXS files is this dual nature. If you receive one, you might not immediately know if it is developer source code or a hobbyist's sewing pattern. The cross-stitch variant is a closed format that requires purchasing specific desktop software to open, edit, or print. It is completely unsupported by standard web browsers or mobile devices, leaving users stranded if they just want to view a pattern.
Users typically want to turn developer .WXS files into compiled MSI executables, which requires compiling the code rather than a simple format conversion. For pattern files, crafters usually want to convert them to PDF or JPG to easily share, view, and print the designs without expensive software.
