About SON files

The .SON file extension is highly fragmented, serving two completely different industries. In music production, it is typically a proprietary project file used by the legacy Cakewalk SONAR sequencer or Capella music notation software. Alternatively, it serves as a specialized data container for side-scan sonar equipment, utilized by devices from Teledyne Marine or Klein Marine Systems. Occasionally, it is also found as a legacy Amiga IFF sound file.

The primary disadvantage of .SON files is their severe lack of interoperability. Music project files do not contain actual audio waves; they only store arrangement data, MIDI notes, and plugin states. You cannot play a .SON file in a standard media player. If you do not have the exact version of the original Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) with all original plugins installed, opening these files is nearly impossible. Similarly, marine sonar files require incredibly expensive, niche software like BlueView SonarViewer or naval architecture tools like Napa Steel to parse the telemetry.

If you have an audio-related .SON file, your ideal target format is a standard audio file like MP3 or WAV, or notation formats like MusicXML or MIDI. For marine sonar data, professionals typically extract the raw telemetry into CSV or convert acoustic images to JPG. Because these formats are closed and highly specialized, standard online converters fail completely. Even if direct conversion is blocked by proprietary encoding, our analysis can often extract embedded metadata, text strings, or underlying audio streams.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SON file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JSON, WRK, SVQ and RMI files.
