About WPT files
The .WPT extension is shared by two completely different file types, creating a common source of confusion.
1. Document Templates (Most Common): primarily generated by Corel WordPerfect, WPS Office, or the legacy 602Text. These files function as blueprints for creating new documents with pre-defined styles, headers, and formatting. The main disadvantage is proprietary lock-in; a .WPT file created in WordPerfect often displays incorrectly or fails to open in Microsoft Word. To share these files with colleagues who do not use specialized office suites, users should convert them to standard DOCX for editing or PDF for archiving.
2. GPS Waypoint Data: utilized by mapping software like OziExplorer, Trimble, and AlpineQuest. These files store geospatial coordinates (latitude, longitude) and route markers. The challenge here is interoperability; a specific GPS unit's format may not work on Google Earth or other devices. For universal mapping use, converting these .WPT files to GPX (GPS Exchange Format) or KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is the best workflow.

The WPT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WPT converter.
