About WPL files
The .WPL format is primarily a Windows Media Player Playlist created by Microsoft. Under the surface, it is a proprietary XML document that uses SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) tags to store a list of audio or video files. A major disadvantage of the .WPL format is that it relies heavily on absolute file paths on your local Windows machine. If you move your music folder or transfer the .WPL file to another computer, the playlist breaks. Additionally, the format is locked into Windows Media Player; modern media players like VLC or Apple Music do not natively support it well. Users frequently need to convert .WPL to universal playlist formats like M3U or PLS to migrate their music libraries. It is critical to understand that a .WPL file does not contain actual audio data like MP3 or WAV files; it only contains text references pointing to where the media is stored on your hard drive. If you try to convert .WPL to MP3, standard converters will fail because there is no audio to convert.
