These are widely used by enthusiast communities (such as those distributing "Ghost Spectre" or custom Windows builds) to package Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE) toolkits. The file contains the bootable system files needed to repair or install Windows.

2. OpenCanvas 1.1 Event File:
Historically, .WPE stands for an "Event File" created by legacy versions of OpenCanvas. Unlike a standard image, this file records the process of drawing - every brush stroke and undo - allowing users to replay the artistic process.

3. Legacy Office Formats:
Less frequently, it may be an encrypted WordPerfect Entrust document or a mislabeled presentation file from the Corel suite.

Common Friction Points:

Deceptive Extensions: Users try to mount the Windows PE .wpe file like an ISO or open it like an EXE, but it fails because it is actually just a 7z archive requiring extraction.
Software Lock-in: The OpenCanvas format is proprietary and version-specific (v1.1). Modern image viewers (Chrome, Photos) cannot open it, and even newer versions of OpenCanvas may struggle without legacy import tools.
