A .WP file is primarily a WordPerfect Document created by WordPerfect, a prominent legacy word processing application now developed by Corel. In some rarer cases, the extension is used by the older Software602 602Text word processor or the SHARP FontWriter. These files store text, page layouts, formatting codes, and embedded graphics. While highly popular in the 1980s and 1990s, the format has largely been superseded by modern alternatives.
Working with .WP files today presents significant compatibility hurdles. It is a proprietary and mostly obsolete format. Modern web browsers, smartphones, and default operating system viewers cannot read .WP files natively. Sharing this format forces the recipient to either own a costly WordPerfect subscription or hunt for vintage compatibility packs. Furthermore, early versions of the format lack standard Unicode support, which frequently causes text encoding to break or appear as unreadable characters when opened in unsupported software.
To ensure your documents remain accessible, you must convert .WP files to standardized formats. DOCX is the optimal target for editing within Microsoft Word. If you need a strict, unalterable layout for sharing or printing, converting to PDF guarantees the document will render exactly the same on any device. For pure text extraction without formatting constraints, TXT is the safest choice.
