About WP files
A .WP file is predominantly a text document created by Corel WordPerfect, a word processing stalwart famous for its distinct "Reveal Codes" formatting architecture. While modern versions standardize on WPD, the .WP extension was widely used in versions 4.2 through 5.x and remains common in legacy legal and academic archives. A secondary, less common origin is the 602Text word processor by Software602.
The real problem with .WP files is proprietary lock-in. While Microsoft Word technically supports opening them, users frequently encounter "File Conversion" dialogs, missing fonts, or broken layouts because Word's object-based rendering engine struggles to interpret WordPerfect's stream-based formatting codes. Furthermore, mobile support is virtually non-existent without specialized apps. To ensure the document remains accessible and editable, the best workflow is converting to DOCX (for Microsoft Word) or ODT (for LibreOffice). For strictly preserving the layout for sharing or archiving, converting to PDF is the standard solution.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted WP8, WP9, WPD, WP5, DOC, DOCX, PNG, PDF, PX, WP6 and W60 files.
The WP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WP converter.
