About WP5 files

A .WP5 file is a legacy text document created by WordPerfect versions 5.0 or 5.1, the gold-standard word processor of the DOS era. These files utilize a proprietary binary format characterized by its famous "Reveal Codes" architecture, which provided absolute control over text layout through inline formatting tags.

The main issue with keeping data in the .WP5 format today is software obsolescence and proprietary lock-in. While Corel (the current owner) maintains backward compatibility, opening these files in standard environments like Microsoft Word or Google Docs is difficult. Word often requires specific legacy import filters that are not installed by default, and even successful opens frequently result in broken tables, missing fonts, or garbled extended characters. Additionally, .WP5 files cannot be viewed natively in web browsers or on mobile devices.

To ensure long-term preservation, converting to .PDF/A is the ideal solution, as it freezes the layout regardless of the original printer drivers used in the 1990s. For text recovery and editing, converting to DOCX or ODT is recommended. LibreOffice is often cited as having a robust filter for parsing these legacy binary streams if you wish to avoid paid software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WP5 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WP5 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WP5 converter.
