About WMO files
A .WMO file is a World Map Object file used by the MMORPG World of Warcraft. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, these files store the static 3D geometry for large-scale environmental structures like buildings, bridges, and dungeons within the game world. Unlike character models, these files do not contain animations.
Because .WMO is a proprietary, closed-source game asset format, it is not supported by standard 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk Maya natively. The format is completely undocumented, designed specifically and solely to be read by the World of Warcraft game engine. This makes working with the files extremely difficult for everyday users. To access the 3D data, users rely on specialized community-built tools like the World of Warcraft Model Viewer to extract and view the assets.
Standard online converters fail to process .WMO files because they lack the highly specialized parsing logic required to read Blizzard's proprietary chunk structures. If you want to use these models in standard engines like Unity or Unreal, you must export them to common 3D formats like OBJ, FBX, or GLTF using WoW Model Viewer. Be aware that you will likely lose proprietary game collision data, portal references, and custom material shaders during this conversion.
Despite these strict limitations, you can just drag and drop your .WMO file into convert.guru to identify the file format, inspect the internal headers, and view raw hex or text strings. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WMO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WMO file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use WoW Model Viewer or similar software from the "3D Game Environment Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to WMO, try WoW Model Viewer or another comparable tool in the "3D Game Environment Storage" category.
The WMO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WMO converter.
