About WMO files

A .WMO (World Map Object) file is a proprietary 3D geometry format developed by Blizzard Entertainment specifically for World of Warcraft. These files define large-scale static structures - such as capital cities, dungeons, towers, and complex buildings - comprising geometry, texture definitions, and collision data. Unlike standard 3D formats like OBJ or FBX, .WMO files are heavily optimized binary containers often compressed within the game's CASC (formerly MPQ) archives. This can lead to major headaches for modders and 3D artists: you cannot simply double-click to view them, nor can you import them directly into tools like Autodesk Maya or Blender without specific import scripts or intermediate extraction software. Furthermore, they rely on external texture files (BLP), meaning a standalone .WMO often appears untextured or broken if the dependencies aren't maintained. To work with these assets, the most practical workflow is converting them to widely supported exchange formats. Converting to OBJ is ideal for static geometry, while FBX is better if you are attempting to preserve hierarchy for game engines like Unity.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WMO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PLY, 3DB and PMC files.
