About WML files
The .WML extension primarily refers to Wireless Markup Language files, an XML-based format developed by the WAP Forum (now part of the Open Mobile Alliance). These files were the standard for the early mobile web (WAP 1.0), designed to deliver low-bandwidth text and simple navigation to early cell phones like older Nokia or Motorola devices. A secondary, specialized use of this extension is for WaterML, an XML schema created by the Open Geospatial Consortium for exchanging hydrological data.
The primary problem for users with legacy WML files is that modern web browsers - including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge - no longer render this format. Attempting to open a .WML file in a browser often results in a raw file download or a display of unformatted XML code filled with <card> and <template> tags, making the content difficult to read. For WaterML users, the challenge is the sheer verbosity of the XML structure, which is not conducive to quick analysis in spreadsheet software.
To make these files usable, intent dictates the target format. For archiving legacy mobile sites or viewing the content as originally intended, converting to HTML or PDF is recommended. For extracting raw data or code migration, converting to TXT or XML preserves the structure. For WaterML data, converting to CSV or JSON allows for easier import into tools like Microsoft Excel or data analysis platforms.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WML file to HTML, HTM, CSS, JS, PHP, ASP, ASPX, JSP, JSPX, PY, RB or PL, you can use Notepad++ or similar software from the "Legacy Mobile Web Pages" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RSS, CSS, CGI, SITEMAP, PL, WEBMANIFEST, JSON, JS, XML, HTML, ICO or HTM files to WML, try Notepad++ or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Mobile Web Pages" category.
The WML Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WML converter.
