About WML files
A .WML file is typically a Wireless Markup Language document. This is an obsolete XML-based format designed in the late 1990s by the WAP Forum for displaying simplified websites on early mobile phones via WAP (Wireless Application Protocol). Less commonly, it represents WaterML, a specialized format by the Open Geospatial Consortium for sharing hydrological data like river levels and rainfall.
Modern web browsers have completely abandoned support for WML. You cannot open these files natively in Chrome, Safari, or Edge. Leaving content in WML makes it completely inaccessible to today's users. Furthermore, WML relies on a unique "deck and card" structure (using tags like <wml> and <card>) that breaks modern HTML parsers.
To make this data usable again, you need to convert .WML to HTML for web viewing, or XML and TXT to extract the raw text or data points. Be aware that converting the file to HTML will flatten the original paginated "card" behavior into a single continuous page.
Because this format is a defunct, specialized standard, many standard online converters fail to process it correctly. Drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our system can identify the underlying XML structure, inspect the file, and often show the internal text even when the original rendering software is long gone.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WML file to HTML, HTM, CSS, JS, PHP, ASP, ASPX, JSP, JSPX, PY, RB or PL, you can use Notepad++ or similar software from the "Mobile Web Markup" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RSS, CSS, CGI, SITEMAP, PL, WEBMANIFEST, JSON, JS, XML, HTML, ICO or HTM files to WML, try Notepad++ or another comparable tool in the "Mobile Web Markup" category.
The WML Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WML converter.
