About FMD files

The .FMD file extension is primarily used for PLC Project files in Schneider Electric Concept software and Fluent Mesh Data files in ANSYS Fluent. Other legacy or niche applications include dBASE IV form files, FlashMagic device data files, and flight models for the IL-2 Sturmovik video game.

These are proprietary, specialized data files. A PLC project file relies on a specific automation environment and is often built on a Microsoft Compound file architecture. An ANSYS mesh file uses complex HDF5 structures to store highly detailed 3D fluid dynamics data. You cannot open these files in standard text editors or web browsers. Without an expensive, specialized software license, accessing the raw data is incredibly difficult. Sharing these files frequently causes workflow bottlenecks because the recipient must have the exact same software version installed to read the data correctly.

Converting an .FMD file directly is rarely possible with generic tools because the data is highly application-specific. For 3D mesh data, users typically want to export to .CGNS, OBJ, or STL formats. For PLC automation files, users generally need PDF reports or CSV data exports.

This file format is difficult to open or convert externally. Often, only the original software can properly read, render, or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as an unencrypted Microsoft Compound container or standard HDF5 data arrays - viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PMD, PNG, BDR, WRD and LET files.

The FMD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FMD converter.
