About WIP files

The .WIP extension primarily represents a WITec Project file, a specialized format developed by WITec GmbH (now part of Oxford Instruments) for storing high-resolution microscopy data. These files act as containers for hyperspectral imaging sessions, including Raman, AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), and SNOM (Scanning Near-field Optical Microscopy) data. A single .WIP file typically holds the raw spectral data, instrument settings, and generated visualizations (heatmaps or topography).

However, this format presents significant friction for researchers and data analysts. Because it is a proprietary scientific format, opening a .WIP file usually requires the expensive and dongle-protected WITec Project Commander or Project FOUR software. This "vendor lock-in" makes it difficult to share raw experimental data with colleagues who do not have a license. Furthermore, users often confuse these scientific files with the generic "Work In Progress" naming convention used by applications like CyberScrub (where .WIP files are temporary disk-wiping artifacts) or InstallShield.

For scientific use, the best workflow is converting .WIP data into open standards. Spectral data should be converted to CSV or TXT for analysis in MATLAB, Python, or Excel. Visual maps and topography scans are best converted to TIFF, PNG, or PDF for publication and easy viewing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WIP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WEBP, ZIP, PDF, RAR, MP4, WFP, POD, HFP and MG files.

The WIP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WIP converter.
