A .WIDGET file typically functions as a container for desktop applets or streaming overlays. Historically, these files were popularized by the Yahoo! Widget Engine (originally Konfabulator) and the Apple Dashboard on macOS. Today, modern broadcasting software like Streamlabs Desktop uses the same extension to export streaming overlay widget settings.
The main disadvantage of older .WIDGET files is that they belong to deprecated, dead ecosystems. Yahoo! shut down its widget platform in 2012, and Apple removed the Dashboard feature entirely in macOS Catalina. Consequently, finding the original software to run these files is extremely difficult and often poses a security risk. If the file comes from Streamlabs, it is completely dependent on that specific software to function as an overlay.
Standard converters fail to turn a .WIDGET into a modern executable because the internal code relies on obsolete APIs. However, many .WIDGET files are essentially just ZIP archives or plain-text JSON files. If you have an Apple Dashboard widget, changing the file extension to ZIP allows you to extract the internal HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files. Streamlabs widgets can often be opened in a text editor to view the JSON configuration.
