A .WDSEML file is a Thunderbird Searchable Email file created by the Mozilla Thunderbird email client. Its primary purpose is to allow the Microsoft Windows Search Indexer to read and index the contents of your emails, enabling you to find messages via the Start menu or File Explorer. These files are typically located in the mozmsgs subdirectory of your Thunderbird profile.
Technically, a .WDSEML file is a partial copy of an email message - often containing the header information and body text but stripping away attachments to save space. Users frequently encounter these files when backing up profiles or recovering data and mistakenly assume they are the master email records. They are not. The actual emails are stored in MBOX files (without extensions) or EML files. Because .WDSEML files are merely stripped-down index helpers, they often fail to open correctly in standard email clients like Microsoft Outlook.
