About WDSEML files

The .wdseml file is an indexed email message file primarily generated by Windows Desktop Search or Mozilla Thunderbird. These files are automatically created in the background by your operating system or email client's indexing engine. They store metadata, text payloads, and headers extracted from your original emails, which allows the search function to locate specific messages instantly without opening the entire email database.

The major disadvantage of the .wdseml format is that it is not intended for direct human interaction. They are background system cache files that often clutter local hard drives. Because they are proprietary data fragments, they require specific indexing software to be interpreted correctly and cannot be opened natively by standard email clients like Microsoft Outlook. They are locked into the architecture of the tool that created them, meaning you cannot just double-click one to read a missing email.

To make these files usable, users typically need to convert .wdseml files to EML, TXT, or PDF. Converting to EML attempts to restore standard email headers so the file can be imported into modern email clients. Extracting to TXT is the most reliable way to recover the raw text of the message, though complex HTML formatting, inline images, and binary attachments are usually lost because the indexer does not cache them.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, internal cache file rather than a standard document. Often, only the original indexing software can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our system will inspect the file to locate the embedded text strings. If our analysis detects a supported underlying text structure, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WDSEML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
