About VP6 files
A VP6 file contains video data compressed using the proprietary TrueMotion VP6 codec developed by On2 Technologies. Historically significant, this format was licensed by Adobe for Flash Player 8, becoming the standard for internet video before the rise of H.264.
Why users convert VP6 files:
Since the global deprecation of Flash Player, VP6 files have become technologically obsolete. They are incompatible with modern web browsers (Chrome, Safari, Edge), cannot be played on mobile devices (iOS, Android), and are rejected by most modern video editing software like Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. Users often encounter these files as raw streams or legacy Flash exports that simply refuse to open.
Best conversion targets:
- For Playback: Convert to MP4 (H.264/AAC). This ensures the video will play on any TV, smartphone, or computer.
- For Editing: Transcode to MOV (ProRes) or MXF (DNxHR) to preserve quality while making the footage editable in modern NLEs.
- For Archiving: Convert to MKV (Matroska), which can hold the video stream and metadata robustly without strict compatibility limitations.

The VP6 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VP6 converter.
