About VML files
A .vml file contains Vector Markup Language data, an early XML-based format created by Microsoft to store 2D vector graphics. It was heavily used in old versions of Microsoft Office (like Office 2000) and was native to legacy Internet Explorer browsers. Other niche software, such as Schneider Electric Vijeo Designer and KiCad, also use the .vml extension for HMI project packages and electronic component macros.
VML is fundamentally obsolete. It lost the vector web standard battle to SVG and is completely unsupported by modern web browsers like Google Chrome, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. If you encounter a standalone .vml file today, you cannot double-click it to view the graphic natively. It survives primarily as legacy code embedded within HTML emails to force compatibility with older Microsoft Outlook clients. Opening these files usually requires digging up outdated software or parsing raw XML code manually.
To make these graphics usable today, you must convert them. For web deployment and modern vector editing in Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape, convert .vml to SVG. If you just need to view the image, convert it to PNG or JPG. For document archiving, use PDF/A. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VML file to HTML, SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, JPG, CDR, WMF, EMF, SWF, FLA or XFL, you can use Microsoft Word or similar software from the "Legacy Vector Graphics Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The VML Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VML converter.
