About VML files

The .VML (Vector Markup Language) format is a legacy XML-based vector graphic standard developed by Microsoft in the late 1990s. While it was once the engine behind vector shapes in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint) and Internet Explorer, it has been effectively superseded by the SVG standard.

The key problem for users today is browser support; modern browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari have completely dropped support for rendering VML, meaning these files often appear as broken images or raw XML code when opened. Furthermore, VML files generated by Office applications often contain proprietary namespaces and excessive markup bloat, making them difficult to edit in standard vector tools like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape.

For web usage, the only practical workflow is converting .VML to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), which preserves the scalable paths but is universally supported. If you need to view the graphic on a device without vector support, converting to PNG is recommended. For archiving technical drawings, PDF ensures the layout remains fixed. Note: A minority of .VML files may be HMI project packages from Schneider Electric Vijeo Designer; if your file is binary rather than text-based XML, it likely belongs to this category.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VLM, HTML, XML, ASD, DOTX and DOCM files.

The VML Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VML converter.
