The .VLP extension primarily refers to a VisiLogic Project file created by Unitronics for their Vision and Samba series of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). This file acts as a container - internally a ZIP archive - holding the compiled Ladder Logic, HMI (Human Machine Interface) designs, and hardware configuration settings. Automation engineers use it to program control systems for industrial machinery.
The real problem for users is version dependency: opening a .VLP file requires the exact version of VisiLogic used to create it, often forcing users to use the Unitronics Version Swapper utility. Because the format is proprietary, you cannot directly "convert" it to a universal editable format like DOCX or C code. However, for documentation, you can open the project in VisiLogic and use the "Print to PDF" feature to create a PDF. For asset recovery, renaming the file extension from .VLP to ZIP allows you to extract embedded images (BMP, JPG) and configuration files without opening the IDE.
Less commonly, .VLP files are Visual Localize Project files used by AIT for software translation. These manage string translations for EXE and DLL files. These can be exported to XML, TXT, or XLS (Excel) for translators who do not have the specialized software.
