A .VLP file is predominantly a PLC System Logic Project created by Unitronics VisiLogic, a software environment used to program logic and design HMI (Human-Machine Interface) screens for Unitronics Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). A secondary use for the .VLP extension is as a Software Localization Project file managed by tools like AIT Visual Localize, which store translated software string data and language packs.
These files present significant operational disadvantages. They are highly proprietary, rigidly tied to specialized hardware or niche localization pipelines, and require licensed, heavy-weight software to open. You cannot view a .VLP file natively in a web browser, standard text editor, or operating system. This vendor lock-in frustrates engineers trying to document legacy PLC code, or developers attempting to share language data with external translators who do not own the requisite software.
Because the format architecture is undocumented and closed-source, standard online converters routinely fail to process .VLP files. There is no simple one-click "VLP to PDF" or "VLP to DOCX" conversion path unless you use the original software's internal export or print capabilities.
However, there is a pragmatic workaround. Many .VLP files are built on standard underlying formats. Unitronics .VLP projects often utilize a standard ZIP container architecture to hold XML and binary data, while Visual Localize packages frequently act as self-extracting EXE archives.
