About BLURB files

A .BLURB file is a proprietary book and magazine project document created primarily by Blurb BookWright or the legacy BookSmart software. These files store page layouts, text blocks, image placements, and cover designs. Internally, a .BLURB file functions as either a local SQL database tracking structural coordinates or a compressed ZIP archive containing raw media assets.

The primary disadvantage of the .BLURB format is its closed, restrictive ecosystem. Users typically want to convert their finished projects to a standard PDF or EPUB to print locally, share digitally, or bypass the Blurb platform. However, Blurb restricts exporting to high-resolution formats without paying a fee, often watermarking free proof exports. This vendor lock-in frustrates users who wish to own and port their layout data.

If you need to move your project, the best target formats are PDF for print-ready documents or ZIP to recover embedded JPG and PNG images. Unfortunately, because the format is highly proprietary and relies on custom rendering engines, standard online converters completely fail to process it to a perfectly formatted document. Usually, only the original Blurb BookWright software can properly read, render, or export the final layout data.

Despite these strict limitations, convert.guru provides a pragmatic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our platform can safely inspect the internal SQL or ZIP structure of the .BLURB file. If our analysis detects supported underlying formats, extracting your original images or viewing raw text is often still possible without opening the heavy desktop software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BLURB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FLP, VPP and EV3 files.

The BLURB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BLURB converter.
