About VFB files

A .vfb file is primarily a legacy font source project created by FontLab Studio 5 or earlier. Unlike final font files (OpenType or TrueType), a .vfb file acts as the "blueprint" for a typeface, containing raw Bézier curves, extensive kerning tables, hinting instructions, and encoding data. Because it is a proprietary binary format tailored to older versions of FontLab, modern operating systems like Windows and macOS cannot install or preview these files directly. This is a major drawback for designers trying to access archived type projects without a license for legacy software. Furthermore, while modern FontLab 8 can import them, other editors like Glyphs or RoboFont cannot open them natively without conversion. To make the font usable, you must convert the .vfb source to a standard OTF or TTF. For cross-editor compatibility, converting to the XML-based UFO (Unified Font Object) format is the industry standard. Less commonly, a .vfb file may contain calendar "free/busy" data used by Microsoft Outlook or Horde Kronolith, typically strictly for internal server synchronization.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VFB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VRIMG, ZIP, WOFF2, SFD and WOFF files.

The VFB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VFB converter.
