About VDB files

The .vdb extension is a classic example of file format collision, most frequently representing OpenVDB Volumetric Data. Originally developed by DreamWorks Animation and now an industry standard, these files store sparse volumetric data like smoke, fire, clouds, and water simulations for high-end visual effects. While powerful, OpenVDB files are notoriously difficult to handle outside of professional 3D suites like Houdini or Blender; they are often massive in size and cannot be opened by standard image viewers. To use these assets in game engines or for 3D printing, users often need to convert the volume into a polygonal mesh format like OBJ, STL, or FBX.

However, a significant portion of .vdb files are unrelated database or system files. This includes Launch Tech X431 automotive diagnostic logs, Vedis embedded key-value stores, and Dr.Web antivirus definitions. These formats are proprietary and binary-locked, creating frustration for users who simply want to view the data inside. For database variants (like Vedis or renamed SQLite files), the goal is typically extracting readable text tables. The best workflow involves identifying the source application and converting the internal data to universal formats like CSV, JSON, or XLSX for analysis.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VDB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WDB, ZIP, OBJ, PDF, HIP, HSD, SCORE and MESH files.

The VDB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VDB converter.
